The Harmony® Multi-Application System is the world's most sophisticated, expandable platform
for aesthetic laser and light treatments. It uses up to seven distinct technologies built into one
compact unit.
- Advanced Fluorescence Technology (AFT™) -
Light-based technology for a wide range of skin treatments including skin rejuvenation,
vascular/pigmented lesions, hair removal and acne.
- Near Infrared Technology -
The near-infrared 780-1,000 module is intended for use for deep dermal heating and is
indicated for the treatment of lax skin in areas such as face, neck and underarm.
- Pixel 2940nm Er:YAG Technology -
The Harmony module for fractional ablative skin resurfacing.
With the advent of Harmony®, we can now perform the widest range of applications ever available
on a single system. Harmony's technologies have been carefully selected and refined to not only
provide excellent safety and efficacy, but to ensure the highest levels of predictability, reliability
and reproducible results.
FDA Status
- Harmony® was cleared to market on April 5th 2004
- The FDA has classified the Harmony® system as a class II medical device
Hair Removal
Photoepilation, or 'hair removal using light,' has gained dramatic popularity over the past several years.
Excellent clinical results, as well as low-risk success for many practices have contributed greatly to the
sensation of this amazing procedure.
While many methods can eliminate unwanted hair, very few can eliminate hair regrowth while leaving the
surrounding skin undamaged. And Photoepilation is quickly becoming the most popular.
Lasers and light sources use the principle of selective photothermolysis to eliminate hair and its potential
regrowth without damaging the surrounding skin. During a treatment, light passes through the skin and is
absorbed by the melanin in the hair shaft. This absorption raises the temperature of the hair follicle and
thermally destroys the cells responsible for regrowth. The attributes of the light (wavelength, pulse duration
and power) are chosen to ensure damage to these cells and not the rest of the skin.
Why is Harmony™ a good choice for Hair Removal?
Harmony™ provides safe and effective methods of delivering to their patient's predictable, reliable and
reproducible Photoepilation results, including:
- Effecting stable long-term or permanent hair reduction
- Use on all skin types (Fitzpatrick I-VI), including tanned skin
- The ability to treat nearly any hair color, from blond to black, as well as most terminal hair textures, from coarse to fine
- The ability to treat hairs on all parts of the body including anywhere on the face, the bikini line, legs, underarms or a man's back
- Causing minimal patient discomfort or side effects
Pigmented Lesions
Nearly 100% of humans have one or more pigmented lesion. Some are cause by sun exposure, others by aging. Still
others are congenital. Regardless of the cause, pigmented lesions are simply spots on the skin where there is a
higher concentration of melanin. Some lesions are flat; others are raised. In most cases, pigmented lesions are
merely a cosmetic concern, but in some cases, they can be an early sign of skin cancer.
For most benign pigmented lesions that are of a cosmetic concern, there is a non-surgical option using light.
By exposing a pigmented lesion to short-pulses of visible light, the temperature in the highly-concentrated
melanin can be raised sharply; enough to shatter the cells containing the melanin. The body then replaces these
cells with new cells generated by the surrounding, untreated area.
Why Harmony™ is a good choice for pigmented lesions
- Harmony's unique wavelength and pulse width capabilities allow it to treat
pigmented lesions on any skin type.
- The epidermal pigmented lesions Harmony™ can treat include: Age spots, melasma, ephelides (freckles), and hyperpigmentation.
- More rapidly treat multiple or larger lesions, compared with other technologies.
- Easy to use, but provides enough flexibility to choose the parameters that are best for each patient's condition.
Skin Rejuvenation
As the last of the Baby Boomers (those born 1946 to 1964) turn 40 this year, the popularity of aesthetic
procedures that aim to turn back the clock is skyrocketing. Brown spots, broken capillaries and other
fallout from photoaging are easy targets for systems that use broadband light to repair these defects
through a process called photorejuvenation. Additionally, facial wrinkles can now be treated non-ablatively,
contributing to a more youthful appearance.
Using relatively low-energy, short-pulse broadband light, imperfections such as erythema of rosacea,
superficial telangectasia, dyschromia, age spots and other discolored signs of photoaging can be gently
heated and eliminated, replaced by newer, younger looking skin.
Using 1064-nm, infrared laser energy to heat the skin's microvasculature and provide dermal heating that
stimulates the growth of new collagen, facial wrinkles can be eliminated easily and non-ablatively.
Why Harmony™ is a good choice for skin rejuvenation?
Patients prefer AFT treatments because:
- The results are immediate and improve with successive treatments.
- Each treatment is gentle and allows them to continue all routine activities.
- Treatments can be done during a lunch hour and no one will notice any sign of
treatment, just a gradual improvement in the skin's appearance!
PIXEL Laser
Download PIXEL White Paper (.Pdf)
A PIXEL is a technique to remove the upper layers of the skin. The depth of the peel depends
on the power settings and the number of passes used. The PIXEL can provide a partial to full
epidermal removal (20-50 microns deep), as opposed to microdermabrasion which acts only on the stratum corneum
layer of the skin (10-15 microns deep). In addition to its beneficial effects on the outer layers of the skin,
it also stimulates collagen production and remodeling in the deeper layers of the skin. The procedure is more
controlled than a chemical peel and it avoids the use of harsh chemicals to refine the skin. The complication
rate from the PIXEL is very low. With the controlled resurfacing associated with this
more aggressive peel, one should expect tangible and visible reduction in sun damage and fine lines in the skin
after one procedure.
The PIXEL delivers results on par with ablative lasers, but it eliminates possible side effects of ablative treatments
such as hypo- or hyper-pigmentation, post-operative infection, swelling, erythema or edema. In addition, the PIXEL can be used on
the face, neck, chest, arms, stomach and hands-a much wider scope than the traditional ablative technologies.
Skin resurfacing with the PIXEL is a gradual process that happens over several treatments. Treatments are fast, thanks to the large spot
size and high 2 Hz repetition rate. Because re-epithelialization occurs quite quickly in the treatment zone, the risk of infection is reduced
significantly from previous conventional treatment methods.
How PIXEL Works
A preprogrammed laser beam passes through the patented PIXEL micro optics lens and penetrates the skin. It creates an ablative and thermal effect at the pixel
area-a micro-injury-without disturbing the surrounding tissue. Those micro-injured areas start the process of healing as collagen remodels,
skin tightens and the skin texture improves. Patients will find the skin around the treatment area feeling firmer and tighter, with a smoother surface texture.
They will not need analgesics or pain medication with the PIXEL, and they can return to work immediately after treatment.
NIR Skin Tightening
Skin remodeling occurs at cellular and molecular levels via the intervention of optical or thermal energy. The
NIR Skin Tightening treatment exerts its biological effect on the skin through two major mechanisms: 1)
heat-induced collagen shrinkage and micro-thermal injury and; 2) dermis regeneration, repair (wound healing)
and remodeling. Cellular contraction involves the initiation of an inflammatory/wound healing sequence that is
perpetuated over several weeks. Following cellular contraction, collagen is laid down as a static supporting
matrix in the tightened soft tissue structure.
