Trans-Umbilical Breast Augmentation (TUBA)

 |
Transumbilical Breast Augmentation is a type of breast enhancement cosmetic surgery. This is an alternative
technique employed to achieve the desired results of breast augmentation with several advantages and few disadvantages.
The TUBA, or Transumbilical Breast Augmentation technique, involves inserting breast implants by way of the belly button,
or umbilical region of the body.
Transumbilical Breast Augmentation is performed under a general or local anesthetic on an outpatient basis, meaning
that the patient will return home shortly after the procedure is complete (usually a few hours later). Transumbilical
Breast Augmentation is done by making a small incision in the inner folds of the belly button. A slender instrument is
then guided under the skin from the navel area to the area behind the breast tissue. A tissue expander is then guided
into the area. This expander creates a pocket of space where the saline implant will be placed. Once the size and location
of the pocket is verified, the next step in a Transumbilical Breast Augmentation is to insert an empty saline implant
into this pocket. The implant is then filled with a sterile saline solution to the desired size. All instruments are extracted
from the body and the incision is closed up with dissolvable stitches.
The advantages specific to doing the breast enlargement through the navel are:
less time under anesthesia than with the other incisions.
generally a faster recovery than with the other incisions.
there is virtually no bleeding incurred by the technique.
very large implants can be used because there is no breast incision that
could pull open from breast skin tension.
no tell-tale scar on the breast, only a tiny one inside the navel.
The disadvantages specific to doing the breast enlargement through the navel are:
can only use saline-filled implants, not silicone-gel-filled, via the navel.
if the breasts have an actual pre-existing deformity, that may not be easy to correct completely via the navel.
it is rare, but possible, for there to be firmness in the abdominal passages used during the surgery.
if additional surgery is necessary, standard breast augmentation techniques may need to be employed.
